RECAP: Bikes, High-Intensity Action, and More at Flat Rock 8/4!

August 4, 2023 -- Three big features dominated a great night at Flat Rock Speedway on Friday as part of Kids Night! This night of racing featured the Kids Bike Giveaway, a brand new activation that included a giveaway of 40 bikes to kids in the grandstands at Flat Rock Speedway.

A total of 40 bicycles were given away, courtesy of sponsors Martin’s Tire and Sales, 20230 Telegraph Road, Brownstown, Big #1 Auto Sales, also at 20230 Telegraph Road in Brownstown, the Flat Rock Meijer store on Vreeland Road and Flat Rock Speedway.

In Moran Chevrolet Outlaw Super Late Models qualifying, Justin Schroeder led the pack with a qualifying time of 11.897 seconds over points leader Conner Zbozien.

In DTS Drive Train Specialists Street Stock qualifying, Kenyon Knight would take the top spot by just three one-thousands of a second over Douglas Litogot - posting a time of 13.414 seconds over Litogot’s 13.417 seconds time.

Jeremy Vanderhoof would set the fastest time in R&M Recycling Figure 8 division qualifying, posting a quick time of 20.861 seconds.

Moran Chevrolet Outlaw Super Late Models

Heat Winners: Chris Benson, Joshua Spindelman

Paul Pelletier made a bonzai three-wide move on the inside of RJ Cornett in the opening laps of the Outlaw Super Late Models 50-lap feature. This move would establish a lead for Pelletier which allowed him to take an early command over the field in this feature.

On Lap 12, Eric Lee made a wild move on the outside of Paul Pelletier, trying to take the long way around to establish his first lead of the race.

Pelletier would hold steady over Lee by maintaining the inside.

Joshua Spindelman would get loose off of turn 4, which would give the leaders some lapped traffic to bump against. This accordioned the field a slight amount, and by lap 22 the top five of Pelletier, Lee, Schroeder, Benson, and Zbozien would fall under a blanket.

Coming into lap 28, Eric Lee would keep right up next to Pelletier, both drivers grasping for grip on the warm summer day in Flat Rock. With ten laps to go, both drivers would go side-by-side - Lee on top, Pelletier on the inside.

At the line, both drivers would go side-by-side with Paul Pelletier just edging out on the inside. By edging out Eric Lee, Pelletier would win his second Moran Chevrolet Outlaw Super Late Models feature of the year.

Eric Lee finished in second place, oh-so-close to his first feature win of the season yet again. Lee looks to close the gap to the points division leaders and defend his 2022 championship campaign.

Conner Zbozien came in third, the only driver to finish in the top 5 in every race so far this season, while still looking for his first win of the season.

Justin Schroeder and Chris Benson would close out the top five after impressive runs from both.

RJ Cornett would finish sixth, followed by Stan Yee Jr and Hayden Sprague. Jeremy Vanderhoof and Derrick Sheppard would complete the top ten.

The Moran Chevrolet Outlaw Super Late Models division will return on August 19th as a part of a big night of racing at the speedway, including the DTS Drive Train Specialists Street Stocks division and the R&M Recycling Figure 8 division. Racing will begin at 7 PM. Follow along with the tracks for more information!

The theme of the season so far has been the story of experience versus younger drivers.

Whether it’s been Greg Studt, Jeremy Vanderhoof, or Brian Norton picking up victories, or Lance Lipasek taking his second ever, this throughline has been an extremely fun story to watch so far in the course of this division’s racing season.

Today, a young driver would take his first ever feature victory at Flat Rock Speedway.

On the front row of the feature, Regan Ford would start with a clear track ahead of young drivers Douglas Litogot, Kenyon Knight, and Johnny Rangel. Ford came into this race searching for his 27th win at Flat Rock. Litogot, Knight, and Rangel all came to search for their first.

Ford would pull out to the early jump, with Knight and Litogot battling side-by-side for the runner up position, with Knight eventually sliding through on the bottom. Rangel would give way on the start to Greg Studt sliding into the fourth position, and the four leaders would quickly form a breakaway from the rest of the pack - Ford, Knight, Litogot, Studt.

The caution would come out for the first time of the evening on lap 12 due to a slide by Batkins.

On the restart, Litogot would start behind Ford, with Knight and Studt taking up the first two slots on the outside. Litogot and Ford would push ahead, the nineteen-year old pushing the rear of the veteran’s #20 race car.

Litogot would slide through with just a few laps to go, and go on to take his first career feature victory at Flat Rock Speedway.

Kenyon Knight would slide through to second place in the final corners over Regan Ford. Knight has consistently been near the front over the past couple of weeks, and currently leads the DTS Drive Train Specialists Street Stock A-Main division point standings, despite waiting for his first feature victory.

Regan Ford would come home third, as the Dearborn native continues a strong part-time 2023 campaign. Robbie Moore Jr would come home in fourth, followed by Jeremy Vanderhoof closing out the top 5.

Jeff Metdepenningen, Johnny Rangel, and Landon Schuster would fill out the next three spots, and Greg Studt and Caleb Barron would complete the top ten.

The DTS Drive Train Specialists Street Stocks division is racing in their biggest event of the year this Saturday with the Corrigan Race Fuels 100 at Flat Rock Speedway! Kenyon Knight will look to hold his points lead over a wide pack of drivers who are waiting on his heels - Jeremy Vanderhoof, Landon Schuster, Johnny Rangel, and Jeff Metdepenningen are all close by in this tight points battle. A 25 lap B-Main is also on the race card.

The rescheduled Monroe Superstore FIREWORKS show will light up the skies Saturday night! Flat Rock Speedway will host a Kids Power Wheels Derby as part of the Saturday, August 12 race card. The highly-popular battery-powered machines will battle on the track at Flat Rock. There’s more action with the Safety Kleen ARCA Enduro 250 lap race and the MCR Dwarf Cars, all part of a great night of family fun and entertainment.

    R&M Recycling Figure 8

Closing out the night came the R&M Recycling Figure 8 division in their longest race of the season. Dennis Whisman Jr returned to Monroe Asphalt Winners Circle after a tight, race-long battle with Billy Earley in an incredible feature of racing.

With no cautions, the younger Whisman slid out to an early lead over Billy Earley. Positions would hold steady until a hair-raising moment on lap 18, as Euguene Worden and Travis Earley would slide through the intersection just in front of the leaders. Whisman Jr, the leader, would need to jump out of the gas to avoid an incident in the intersection. Earley utilized this opportunity to slide through and take his first lead of the night.

At the half-way point of the 50-lap feature, a breakaway lead pack would be formed, with Earley leading over Dennis Whisman Jr and Jeremy Vanderhoof very close behind.

10 laps later, the move would be made. Dennis Whisman Jr would slide to the bottom of the track and through to the lead over Billy Earley. This would be the pass for the lead!

Jeremy Vanderhoof would slide past Billy Earley in the final stages of the feature to take the runner-up position in this big feature of racing.

This is Whisman’s fourth feature win of the season. He tails Jeremy Vanderhoof in the points battle by just 40 points. The August 26th Harris Mechanical season championships are looming over the final weeks of the 2023 season at Flat Rock Speedway, with a big R&M Recycling Figure 8 division points battle ahead.
