RECAP: Big Wins on a Big Night at Jack's Bicycle Scout Day

June 3rd, 2023 -- Jack’s Bicycle Scout Night came on Saturday Night as a hit, with scouts in attendance and warm weather providing an exciting backdrop to the debut of Great Lakes Legends Car racing to Flat Rock Speedway! This uniquely Canadian night of racing proved to be a fun one, with many great moments, new winners, and memorable moments along the way.

Scott Goocher of Jack’s Bicycle of Monroe came with an activation, and presented trophies to start the night!

In the DTS Drive Train Specialists Street Stocks division, Regan Ford in the #20 went fastest with a time of 13.288, his first of 2023. Rob Moore Jr. and Greg Studt would follow up behind, taking times of 13.314 and 13.316s respectively.

In the first Safety-Kleen Enduro 250 qualifying session of 2023, Brad Turner would take a fast qualifying time of 14.433 over Dale Buttrey and Rayce Metdepenningen.

Great Lakes Legends Series

In the US debut for the Canadian Great Lakes Legends Series at Flat Rock, Greg Rudzik would drive from third to first  in the first four laps to take his first Great Lakes Legends Series win of the season. Rudzik passed Sean McPherson for the lead on lap four, and never looked back en route to his win.

Approximately two seconds behind came defending series champion Kenny McNicol, Sean McPherson in the #300, and Joe Adams in a skilled battle for second place between the three drivers. A very familiar face to Flat Rock in Guy Fire would round out the top five with an impressive drive in the #15 legends car.

AJ Bunch and Joe Sherman would come next, followed by Austin Arnel, Joe Russ, and Zach Hatch completing the top ten.

Heat Winners: Kenyon Knight, Rob Randa, Lonnie York, Dale Buttrey

Before the season, when talking with Jeff Metdepenningen, the veteran driver made a note of highlighting the 50-lapper as a race he was primarily looking forward to in the 2023 season.

“I come from the Enduro 250 series where its 250 laps” said Metdepenningen, “So I like the longer races.”

He certainly enjoyed his Saturday night.

Jeff Metdepenningen highlighted the night by driving from sixth to first in just two laps en route to a major win in a major race - the DTS Drive Train Specialists Street Stocks A-Main 50-lap feature.

Metdepenningen started outside the top eight, only reaching sixth by lap 12. The front of the field was highlighted by an impressive battle between young drivers Kenyon Knight and Johnny Rangel, who paced the field for the first stint of the race. Knight drove an extremely low line, making it difficult for Rangel, or Greg Studt in third, to make any moves on the driver of the #19 in this long race. The top ten of Knight, Rangel, Studt, Litogot, Ford, Metdepenningen, Allen, Schuster, Vanderhoof, and Moore Jr. quickly became a snake, testing patience against the opportunity of making a pass on the tight oval.

The shake-up would come on lap 35, as Rangel would finally find an opportunity to get past Knight, who briefly lost the lead to Studt before regaining through lapped traffic on lap 39. Rangel would then lose the lead on lap 41 to Metdepenningen, who would slide through on the inside for the race lead. This came just before the first caution of the day on lap 43, which involved a number of drivers including Douglas Litogot in the #71.

On the restart, a tight battle between Metdepenningen and Rangel would eventually be won out by the veteran Metdepenningen, who would go on to take his first win of the season, and in a big race as well!

2022 defending series champion Jeremy Vanderhoof would come home second, followed by Jonathan Rangel, Greg Studt, and fast qualifier Regan Ford completing the top five.

Landon Schuster in the #118 would come home in sixth, followed by Kenyon Knight, Ron Allen, Jim Froling, and Rob Moore Jr finishing out the top ten.

This is Metdepenningen’s fifth win all-time at Flat Rock Speedway in Street Stock competition, and it’s not his first win in a longer street stock race - He also has a win in the 100-lapper under his belt.

Street Stocks B-Main

In a heart-warming moment in Monroe Asphalt Winners Circle, Chuck Pankow added his name to the record books on Saturday Night. The 67-year old driver took his first ever feature win at Flat Rock Speedway in the DTS Drive Train Specialists B-Main!

Pankow took the win in convincing fashion over Mayhem Mike Miller by just under 5.5 seconds.

Ian Jezylo came in third, followed by Dale Buttrey and Justin Peterman to close out the top five.

The DTS Drive Train Specialists Street Stocks division will take a weekend off this weekend and will be back in two weekends on JAC LED Autograph Night at Flat Rock Speedway, June 17th! Click below to learn more.

Enduro 250

Brad Turner went on a Saturday cruise on Saturday night, posting a very convincing win over Robb Remick in the Safety-Kleen Enduro 250 feature. Turner, the fastest qualifier, drove from seventh to first in the matter of 45 laps, and didn’t look back on the way to a dominant performance, leading all 205 remaining laps en route to a big victory.

Robb Remick came home in second place, followed closely by Rayce Metdepenningen in third. 2022 defending series champion Derrick Sheppard came home soon after, followed by Justin Chamberlin in the #55 to close out the top five.

Nathan Sprotberry and Troy Brehmer finished in sixth and seventh, followed by the Canadian Tony Rumble in the #04! Kyle Metdepenningen and Jeff Evans closed out the top ten.

This is Turner’s first EVER Flat Rock Speedway Enduro 250 victory.
