Remembering Steve Lee

Steve Lee, who drove to multiple track championships and dozens of feature wins, then as car owner and crew chief helped his son Eric Lee surpass his own accomplishments in ARCA Late Model racing, passed away at the age of 69 on March 26. His determination to withstand health challenges saw him lead his winning race team to Flat Rock Speedway through the 2023 racing season, as documented in a Macomb Daily article by George Pohly (click here).

Steve Lee began his racing career in 1972 at Mt. Clemens Race Track at the age of 18. He won races at numerous tracks including Checker Flag Raceway in Ontario, Mt. Clemens (both of which are now closed) and at Flat Rock Speedway where he enjoyed his greatest success as a driver as well as a team owner/crew chief for his son Eric. At Mt. Clemens, Steve was the 1976 ARCA Super Six division champion and the 1980 Limited Sportsman division champion, when he won 13 of 19 features. His 20 career ARCA Late Model feature wins ranks him 11th all-time at Flat Rock, and he was the 1995 ARCA Late Model champion driver. His Lee Motorsports racing team put up even bigger numbers at Flat Rock in ARCA Late Model competition, as Eric Lee’s 30 career feature wins are 3rd all-time behind only Joy Fair and Dave Kuhlman, and his 6 season championships are 2nd all-time only to Fair. Eric Lee has won the Stan Yee 150 race at Flat Rock three times, especially significant since Steve Lee drove for the legendary car owner Yee in his championship season of 1995.

Steve Lee worked for the Macomb County Road Commission for 28 years before retiring, but continued to own and operate the successful Mt. Clemens-based auto sales business he founded, Lee Motorsports.

Steve Lee is survived by his son Eric (Kristy) Lee; grandchildren Avery, Brayden, and Shelby; sister Sharon Jackson; and many loving family members including nieces and nephews. Visitation is Friday April 5 from 2-8pm, at Lee-Ellena Funeral Home, 46530 Romeo Plank Road, Macomb MI 48044, where he will lie in state Saturday April 6 from 10-11am with Funeral Service at 11am.
