Remembering Mel Gillett

Melvin “Mel” Gillett, who drove at Flat Rock and Toledo Speedway in the ARCA Late Model division for nearly 20 years, passed away Sunday Feb. 4, 2024 in his lifelong hometown of Howell, Michigan. He was 84.

Gillett drove ARCA Late Models numbered 11 to top-10 points finishes throughout the 1970s at both Flat Rock and Toledo. He had consecutive top-10 points finishes at both tracks from 1973 through 1976, with a best points finish of 5th at Toledo in ’75 and Flat Rock in ’76.

Gillett, a business owner and entrepreneur in Howell, was a US Navy veteran, member of the American Legion and Howell Eagles Club. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Livingston County Humane Society. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Susan; sons Todd (Angela) and Cale (Christy) Gillett; 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
