HEAVY RAINS WASH OUT FLAT ROCK CHAMPIONSHIPS

Flat Rock Speedway’s Harris Mechanical Season Championships that were scheduled for Saturday, August 26 have been cancelled.

The Southeast Michigan area was hammered with 6 to 7 inches of rain early Thursday morning and again late Thursday night. The track infield was totally flooded.

As of 9 a.m. Saturday, turns 3 and 4 have water weeping across the track in several spots. Water was still standing in turns 1 and 2 and above the yellow line. The parking lot is covered in standing water.

“The water weeping on the track is our biggest issue,” noted Ron Drager, Owner and Promoter of the track. We have worked all day Thursday and Friday into the night to try to get the facility ready for today”, said Drager. “We would not be able to race in these conditions”.

As previously announced, the event will not be rescheduled.

The 2023 ARCA/Flat Rock Speedway champions are Justin Schroeder, Moran Chevrolet Outlaw Super Late Models; Jeremy Vanderhoof, R & M Recycling Figure 8’s; Kenyon Knight, DTS Drive Train Specialists Street Stock A Main; Ian Jezylo, DTS Drive Train Specialists Street Stock B Main; and Derrick Sheppard, Safety Kleen Enduro Series.

The final 2023 event is set for next Saturday, September 2. The Dunwell Dry Goods School Bus Figure 8 race is the featured event of the night. The Figure 8’s, Street Stocks and the Safety Kleen Factory Stocks will also be in action with a features-only format. A Boat Figure 8 race and a Flag Pole race are also on the race card.

The event has a special start time of 6 p.m. The front gates and ticket office will open at 3:30 p.m. on race day.

You can purchase tickets in person at the track office or call the track office at 734-782-2480 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, or online at www.flatrockspeedway.com. General admission tickets only are available online.

I understand why everyone is disappointed champions night isn't rescheduled but the track had rain dates set for about every other big event. And also to be fair it's been announced since beginning of season that this race didn't have a rain date.  I wanted to race but I also junked a car beginning of the year beige out on a wet track obviously mainly my fault I sent it to deep into 2. But I applaud them for calling it. Yall can't expect the impossible there doing what they can to the best there abilities

There are environmental services that would actually take care of rain like this for minimal charge. They hydro vac the water to ensure dry tracks and have mobility to get around. It would also clean debris from the track would love to have this reach HQ as far as a friendly suggestion and i agree the race should have been rescheduled.

Ron & Liam, I totally understand why tonight was cancelled, but not rescheduling is a very bad move. You achieved great PR by opening the pits to all fans during the ARCA East event, but not you have shot yourself in the foot not having a rescheduled Championship Night and telling fans and drivers that this event does not mean much to management.  I remember this same thing happening a few years back here and just maybe that was the beginning of the smaller car counts and fewer fans in the stands.
