FLAT ROCK SPEEDWAY’S 70TH SEASON KICKS OFF MAY 7

FLAT ROCK SPEEDWAY’S 70TH SEASON KICKS OFF MAY 7

August 14, 1953 was the date of the first race at Flat Rock Speedway, a ¼ mile asphalt oval, the first “rubberized” track in the country.   Detroit-area paving icon Sheldon Hayes Sr. and several of his fellow businessmen built the track, just 20 miles southwest of downtown Detroit, MI, located on Telegraph Road, the main northbound-southbound artery in the day while I-75 was being developed.

Fast-forward to 2022-the 70th Anniversary season of auto racing at “The Rock”.  The track will begin this milestone year Saturday afternoon, May 7, as the ARCA Outlaw Super Late Models, Figure 8’s and Street Stocks take the green flag to kick off the season.  These same 3 classes have been featured at the track since 1977.

Saturday afternoon racing takes place for the month of May, beginning May 7, with a 4 p.m. start time.  This schedule was put into place in 2021, and track management will retain the afternoon shows for the beginning of the 2022 racing season.

Pre-season practices and the Flat Rock Historical Society Flea Market, set for Sunday, May 1, will take place at the track prior to opening day.

The official 70th Anniversary celebration will take place Saturday night, July 9.  The largest Fireworks display in the history of the track will conclude the night of racing.  The track has presented the pyrotechnics show since 1981 with the same family which operated the Volcano Fireworks Company, today run by Mike Anetzberger through Wolverine Fireworks.  More details for this event will be released in the new year.

The complete schedule for 2022 is expected to be released around the holiday season.
