THROWBACK THURSDAY---1954

Flat Rock Speedway was promoted by NASCAR founder and President Bill France Sr. from 1954-1956.  In 1954, The Flat Rock 500-yes, a 500 lap race at “The Rock” was on the schedule.  The winner was Lee Petty, Richard Petty’s father!  France is pictured here with Petty to accept the trophy.

A pair of NASCAR “Convertible Series” races were run at Flat Rock in 1956.  On July 1, Curtis Turner topped “Tiger” Tom Pistone” to win the 250 lap race.  Allen Adkins won the 200 lap event on August 12, beating 2nd place Dick Joslin by a whopping 19 laps!
