Flat Rock Speedway Congratulates WDIV on National Murrow Award

Flat Rock Speedway congratulates WDIV’s Alex Atwell and Hans Ihlenfeldt on winning a National Murrow Award for a story called “Criss-Cross Crash”, shot and produced at the speedway during one of the track’s famous School Bus Figure-8 shows in 2018. Award recipients demonstrate the spirit of excellence that Edward R. Murrow set as a standard for the profession of electronic journalism.

The three-and-a-half minute piece won the “Excellence in Sound” award for large market television as it captured the sounds of the racing action, the crowd, and Michigan Motorsports Hall of Fame announcer Gary Lindahl throughout a night of ARCA-sanctioned racing at the quarter-mile oval located one mile south of Flat Rock and about 20 miles south of Detroit. ARCA Menards Series officials “Terrible” Terry Smith and Jack “Jacques” Franzil were also interviewed and footage from an on-board camera inside Franzil’s bus was used in the piece.
