REMEMBERING ROB MARTEL

Robert Louis “Robbie” Martel, whose participation in ARCA Figure-8 racing produced victories and championships at Flat Rock and Toledo Speedways, as well as in the ARCA Figure-8 Series, died Monday December 18. He was 50.

In addition to the race wins and championships as a car owner and mechanic, he earned special recognition awards from several organizations. He was the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement award from ARCA, was the 1990 WBVS Mechanic of the Year and won the 2010 Michigan Auto Racing Fan Club Mechanic of the Year award.

Robbie was born January 2, 1967 and was the son of Robert and Carol Martel, who preceded him in death. He is survived by nieces Melissa Valdes and Alicia Waganfeald; nephews Michael Waganfeald and Joshua Martel; many aunts, uncles, cousins, great nieces, great nephews and friends.

Visitation is 3-7pm with Funeral Service at 7pm Thursday, December 21, at the Vermeulen-Sajewski Funeral Home, 980 N. Newburgh Road (between Ford Road and Cherry Hill), Westland Michigan 48185. Memorial contributions to the family are suggested.

We will miss Robbie Martel, whose devotion to the ARCA Figure-8 division and support of Flat Rock and Toledo Speedway since the 1980s made a great impact. A very determined individual, we were fortunate to have him. RIP Robbie.
