REMEMBERING JIM SELMI

REMEMBERING JIM SELMI

Jim Selmi, the only ARCA Street Stock driver to compete in all five decades of the division’s existence (1970s through 2010s) passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, April 19 at the age of 78. Jim led a large contingent of Selmi family members who competed in ARCA Street Stock races at Flat Rock Speedway, including his brothers Tom Selmi and Tim Selmi, as well as his son Scott Selmi who is a still-active and consistent winner.

Jim Selmi drove to a total of 10 career feature wins and was among the pioneers of the ARCA Street Stock division, which got its start in 1977 at Flat Rock. His biggest win came in the annual season-ending Street Stock Nationals Invitational held at the track. He was the Flat Rock Speedway ARCA Street Stock championship points runnerup in 1994 and 5th in points in 1995.

Jim Selmi drove #137 and, as he reduced the frequency of his driving activities, became a regular attendee in support of the efforts of his son Scott’s #24 and visiting with racing friends in the pit area.

Visitation will be held Friday, April 22 from 2-9 p.m. at the Turowski Life Story Funeral Home, 30200 Five Mile Road, Livonia MI 48154 (734) 525-9020. He will lie in-state from 10 a.m. until services at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 23 at St. Michaels Church, 11441 Hubbard, Livonia MI  48150.

Jim and all the Selmi family have meant a lot to Flat Rock Speedway over the years. Will always remember Jim pulling up to the pit gate towing his #137 with his motor home. Great guy, great racer--best to the family at this time.
