REMEMBERING BOB HEBESTREIT

Bob “Hebie” Hebestreit, long time ARCA Official at Flat Rock and Toledo Speedways and on the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards tour, died Friday Nov. 6. “Hebie” had a broad background in racing, starting with his motorcycle racing days in the 1940s. He was a mechanic, sponsor and car owner at local tracks around Detroit before becoming an early and influential supporter of ARCA founders John and Mildred Marcum in the 1950s. He was instrumental in helping the Marcums establish ARCA at Flat Rock Speedway in the early 1960s, working as a liaison between Flat Rock track ownership at the time and the Marcums. In addition to being an ARCA Official at Flat Rock and Toledo Speedways for decades, Hebestreit went on to become a NASCAR Winston Cup Series Official and closed out his long career in racing as an official with the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards. Hebestreit was still active as an ARCA Official into his 80s, retiring in 2009 due to health reasons. He and his wife Frances, long time residents of Melvindale Michigan, moved to Newport Tennessee in retirement, where he passed away on his 90th birthday. He was preceded in death by a son, Carroll. He is survived by his wife Frances, 2 daughters, 7 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Funeral services will be at the direction of Manes Funeral Home, 363 East Main Street, Newport Tennessee 37821, will host funeral services with visitation from 5-7pm Tuesday Nov. 10 and funeral service at 7. Burial will be Wednesday Nov. 11 at 11am at Faubian Cemetery.
