FLAT ROCK SPEEDWAY THROWBACK THURSDAY

FLAT ROCK SPEEDWAY THROWBACK THURSDAY

A popular trend among social networking sites is Throwback Thursday, reminding us of some popular memory from the past. In recognition of Throwback Thursday, FlatRockSpeedway.com will feature a “Blast From The Past” each week.

FLAT ROCK #1

You can’t Throwback any further than the initial construction of Flat Rock Speedway, built by Sheldon Hayes Sr. who was at the time owner of Cadillac Asphalt Paving Company. Construction was completed in late 1952, and the track’s first full season of operation was 1953. What is now known as the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards, in its inaugural season of 1953, raced at Flat Rock. The track was promoted by a host of individuals from 1953-1961 including Hayes Sr., NASCAR founder Bill France Sr., Ira Latimer, Elton Gudith and Joan Simmons. When John Marcum and his MARC organization (predecessor to ARCA) arrived in 1962, it started a relationship that exists today with ARCA in both an ownership and management capacity.
