BENNETT-BOBEK-BYRNE TAKE FLAT ROCK VICTORIES

BENNETT-BOBEK-BYRNE TAKE FLAT ROCK VICTORIES

(Flat Rock Michigan—May 17, 2014):  A chilly evening greeted fans and race teams Saturday for Scout Night at Flat Rock Speedway.  Danny Bennett, Stephen Bobek and Terry Byrne captured the feature wins and visited the 7-Up Winner’s Circle.

A great race opened up the 4-race Enduro Series at “The Rock”, as Danny Bennett edged his brother Rick in the final 8 laps to win the 250 lap contest and the $1000 first place prize.  The action started on lap 16 for the 24 car field when defending Enduro champ Jeff Metdepenningen scattered an engine.  With the turn 3 area coated with oil, Jimmy Tucker blasted the turn 3 wall, stopping the action.  Jimmy was ok and the race resumed.  Robb Remick led early, with Danny Bennett taking the lead after the red flag.  Rick Bennett joined the battle and the brothers put on a show as they diced back and forth in traffic for the last 75 laps.  On lap 236, Rick grabbed the point in traffic, only to have Danny snare the lead on lap 242 on his way to the win over his brother Rick.  Remick, Troy Brehmer and Derrick Sheppard rounded out the top five.  Bobby Hugo, Mike Dailey, Kyle Metdepenningen, Tony Rumble and Rayce Metdepenningen completed the top 10 finishers.

The 20 lap MCR Dwarf Car feature race saw great competition for the win.  Troy Hoffman took the lead early, but Hoffman slowed in the closing laps, allowing Kim Hughes to slide by for the lead.  The man on the move was Stephen Bobek.  The fleet speedster ran side by side with Hughes for several laps until Stephen gained control as he sailed to the win, his second in a row in MCR competition at Flat Rock.  Only one caution flag waved to slow the event.  Eric Hoffman, Junior Gould, Hughes, Morgen Baird, Joe McManman, Jeff Slayton, Mike McManman, Roger Balcom and Troy Hoffman were next in line at the stripe. Hughes and Eric Hoffman won the heat races.  Bobek set fast time at 12:796.

The VROA Modified Coupes made their first trip to Flat Rock.  A rain shower slowed the action for about 10 minutes during the feature, but that was it and the track dried quickly, allowing the race to continue.  Steve Fuller looked to be in charge of the main event, but a late-race bump from Terrry Byrne moved him slightly up the track, giving Byrne the low groove and an open lane to the lead and the win.  Fuller took second, Tom Boorsma third, Don Deyman fourth and John Evans fifth, followed by Andrew Bartoszek, Todd Cowan, Billy Eppink, Jeff Barsen and Matt Taylor.   Deyman and Fuller took the heat wins.  Evans posted quick time at 13:664.

Saturday, May 24 Flat Rock Speedway will host the Diamond Racing Products Joy Fair Memorial 100 for the ARCA Discount Tire Gold Cup Late Model Series.  A field of 25-35 of the top Late Models in the area should be on hand for this big event.   The DTS Drive Train Specialists Street Stocks will also be in action.

The pit area opens at 1:30, practice begins at 3, time trials are at 5 and racing begins at 7 p.m.  The front gates will also open at 3 p.m.
