MONROE COUNTY FAIR DEMOLITION DERBY ADJUSTS RULES PACKAGE

MONROE COUNTY FAIR DEMOLITION DERBY ADJUSTS RULES PACKAGE

MONROE, MI—Officials of the Monroe County Fair Demolition Derby have announced a new rules package for the 6pm Derby scheduled for Tuesday, August 4, while the 9pm Derby rules remain the same as in previous years.

The new rules, referred to as Semi Stock, will emphasize a much more stock Derby car, with far less modifications allowed to the car. The purpose of the new rules package is to reduce the investment in time, effort and finances individual Derby drivers and teams have to make to put a competitive Derby car on the track.

Veteran Monroe County Fair Derby drivers Jason Goff and Eric Mack, both former Derby winners, were instrumental in developing the new rules package. Over the years, the traditional Derby cars and rules have been modified to allow for a great deal of investment in a car that will last for several Derbies and can be raced in Derbies throughout the state. However, Derby officials and drivers expressed concern that less experienced Derby participants who were new to the sport were being discouraged by this trend.

The new Semi Stock Demolition Derby rules include a statement emphasizing the goal of welcoming new drivers and teams and those who desire to make less of an investment in their Derby cars. Goals of the rules for the new division include making builds more economical, less time consuming and easier to compete with a more stock, less modified vehicle. Strict enforcement of the Semi Stock rules will clearly separate those Derby cars racing in the 6pm Derby from the more modified Derby cars racing in the 9pm Derby. Also featured regularly in the Derby programs are exhibition races for Figure-8 Demolition Derby cars.

The Monroe County Demolition Derby is the largest motorsports event of its kind held in the state of Michigan. Sanctioned by ARCA since its inception in 1969, the derby has attracted as many as 250 drivers and cars. The single-day event is contested on the rectangular dirt track at the Monroe County Fairgrounds. The Monroe County Fair sells tickets to two separate events, a 6pm and a 9pm Derby, typically attracting thousands of spectators for each event. The race rules require cars to impact one another at least once every 30-60 seconds until a single car is left running. The Monroe County Fair Demolition Derby is administrated and sanctioned by the Monroe County-based national motorsports sanctioning body ARCA (Automobile Racing Club of America). ARCA sanctions over 100 motorsports events each season including weekly racing at Flat Rock and Toledo Speedways in addition to ARCA Racing Series races at tracks such as Daytona Int’l Speedway and Michigan Int’l Speedway.

More information on the rules packages for Derby cars and racing procedures is available at the Monroe County Fair website or by contacting ARCA at (734) 847-6726.
