(TOLEDO, Ohio - June 21, 2012) - Toledo Speedway will present its 2nd
open-wheel racing event of the season Friday evening, June 29 for the annual
Hemelgarn Racing/Super Fitness United States Auto Club (USAC)
double-header. The 2012 edition of the
event will feature the USAC Traxxas Silver Crown Cars and the USAC Mopar
National Midget Series.
Local
businessman and 1996 Indy 500 winning car owner Ron Hemelgarn returns again to
sponsor the traditional USAC double-header at Toledo through his Hemelgarn Racing team and
Super Fitness.
Both groups
will be making the trip to Toledo from their
events at the Iowa Speedway in Newton,
Iowa this weekend.
New to this
race date is the appearance of the Silver Crown Cars, which have competed at Toledo the past 2 years
for their championship event in October.
The June 29 date is the one and only stop in Toledo for these big open-wheel machines that
compete on both the dirt and asphalt.
Leading the probable entries is 2011 Series champion Levi Jones of Olney, IL. Toledo race
winner and track record holder Kody Swanson of Kingsburg, CA
is also on the roster. Kody set the 1
lap mark of 14:809 last October at the fast ½ mile paved oval. Parma, MI resident Brian Tyler, a local favorite, is also
expected to be on hand, along with current point leader Bud Kaeding of Campbell, CA. Jones edged out Kaeding by a mere 3 points
for the 2011 title that was decided at Toledo.
A 100 lap feature race is on the card for the Toledo date for the Silver Crown machines.
The Mopar
National Midget Series will also compete on the ½ mile. Current point leader and 2011 Toledo race winner Darren Hagen of Riverside,
CA will try to stretch his season lead at Toledo.
Swanson will
be pulling double duty June 29 for the Hemelgarn Racing/Super Fitness-sponsored
race night at the Glass
City oval. Other drivers slated to compete in both types
of cars at Toledo include Jones, Bobby East (Brownsburg, IN), Bobby Santos (Franklin, MA), Tracy Hines (New Castle,
IN), Kyle Hamilton (Danville,
IN) and Tanner Swanson (Kingsburg, CA). The Midget Series will run heat races, a
last-chance race (if necessary) and a 30 lap feature event.
Toledo’s new grandstand seating, located at
the end of the front-stretch and going into the turn 1 area have been met with
rave reviews. The angle and height of
the stands provide superb viewing of all of the action on the ½ mile
track. In addition to the stands,
speedway management has also replaced the lighting system in the turns and
back-chute, again with very positive response to the improvement by drivers and
fans alike.
The pit area
will open at 2 p.m. on June 29, practice begins at 4, time trials are slated
for 6 and racing begins at 7:30 p.m. ALL
tickets go on sale race day at the track at 4 p.m. and seating is general
