JIOVANI FLIES AT “THE ROCK”

Flat Rock, MI—May 21, 2016: Frankie Jiovani reeled in racer leader Jeff Vrsek with 13 laps to go and scored the win in the 50 lap ARCA Moran Chevrolet Late Model feature Saturday night at Flat Rock Speedway. Tim Moore, Rich Abel and Dan Apperson were also victorious on NASH ICON 98.3/UAW Local 3000 Night. The speedway also hosted members of the Monroe County 4-H Clubs for the evening.

Stan Yee Jr. grabbed the lead on the start of the 50 lap ARCA Moran Chevrolet Late Model feature event. Just 6 laps into the race, the red flag was displayed when Matt Bullock and Paul Pelletier tangled in turn one. Paul’s car climbed the rear of Bullock’s machine, which gave last week’s winner Corey Duane no place to go. Corey’s car climbed the side of Pelletier’s car and tagged the wall, ending his night. On the restart, Yee led the field until lap 12 when Jeff Vrsek motored by on the outside groove. Vrsek was strong out front and had built up a sizable lead. Jiovani, who got boxed in traffic early, broke free and went by second place Jimmy Thiel, setting his sights on the leader. Jiovani darted under Vrsek on lap 37 and sailed to the win over Vrsek, who recorded his best finish of his career. Thiel was third, Yee fourth and Bob Varney came home fifth, followed by Pelletier, Jimmie Ward Jr., Chris Benson, Bullock and Steve Hawes. Jiovani, Terry Bogusz and Dennis Rederstorf took the heat wins. Duane set the Moran Chevrolet fast time for the 17 car field at 11:746. The “Mystery Award” bonus, now grows to $400 for the May 28 race. A number from 1 to 10 is selected, and if the driver starting in that position wins, he collects the bonus. If there is no winner, $100 is added and it goes to the next event.

Tim Moore snared the lead from Nick Shanks on lap 5 and held the point the rest of the way as he grabbed the win in the 25 lap ARCA DTS Drive Train Specialists Street Stock A Main feature. Several yellows slowed the action, but Tim ran strong out front to the stripe and topped his brother, Rob, Guy Fire, Greg Studt, Shanks, Arnold Kirsch, Ray Morneau Jr., Landon Schuster, Scott Selmi and Randy Cornett. Rich Abel picked up his second win in as many tries in the 15 lap B Main event. Rookie James Baber was second, Adam Jezylo third, Jeffrey Kurzyniec fourth, followed by Stephanie Bradley and Dennis Helsel. Morneau Jr. posted the Fastime Racing Engines and Parts fast time for the 27 car field at 13:481, while Abel topped the B cars at 14:560. Heat race winners were Rob Moore, Fire, Chris Diovardi and Billy Earley.

The evening concluded with the 20 lap ARCA Victory Lane Oil Change Figure 8 contest. Youngster Dennis Whisman Jr. took the lead at the drop of the green and looked very solid out front. Dan Apperson tagged along and hounded Whisman for several laps until he sped by for the number 1 spot. Billy Earley and Jeremy Miller followed Apperson by Whisman and that trio battled to the checkered flag. Earley tried to duck under Dan heading into the corners, but Dan had enough power to stay out front for the victory. Earley was second, Miller third, Jeremy Vanderhoof fourth and Whisman Jr. fifth, followed by Randy Roberts, Travis Earley, Ricky Ferrell, Dennis Whisman Sr. and David Katafiaz. Miller set the Fastime Racing Engines and Parts fast time at 20:947. Both Dad and son, Dennis Whisman Sr. and Jr., took heat race wins.
